Olympic Boxer Abandons Bout Amid Gender Eligibility Controversy

Italian Boxer Refuses to Continue After Heavy Punch

Algerian Boxer Involved in Gender Eligibility Test Failure

In a shocking incident at the Paris Olympics, Italian boxer Angela Carini abruptly abandoned her opening bout against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds. Carini, visibly distressed, refused to continue after receiving a heavy punch.

The decision stems from concerns raised over Khelif's gender eligibility. In 2023, Khelif and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting, were disqualified from the world championships after failing testosterone and gender eligibility tests.

According to International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev, the boxers underwent DNA tests to determine their eligibility. The results of these tests have not been made public.

Carini's decision to abandon the bout raises questions about the adequacy of the IBA's gender eligibility protocols and the fairness of the competition for female boxers who face concerns over their eligibility.

The incident is sure to spark further scrutiny of the IBA's handling of gender eligibility issues and the potential impact on the integrity of the Olympic boxing tournament.
