Former Heisman Trophy Candidate Calls it Quits after Six Seasons

Rashaad Penny, the former first-round pick of the Carolina Panthers, has announced his retirement from the NFL after six seasons in the league.

Penny, 28, was a standout running back at San Diego State University, where he won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back in 2017. He was selected 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2018 NFL Draft.

During his time with the Seahawks, Penny rushed for 1,918 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also caught 145 passes for 942 yards and three touchdowns. Penny was a key contributor to the Seahawks' run to the Super Bowl in 2019, but injuries limited his playing time in recent seasons.

Penny was traded to the Panthers in 2022, but he only played in five games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. He was placed on the injured reserve list in December and was not activated for the rest of the season.

Penny's retirement is a reminder of the physical toll that football can take on the body. He has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, including torn ACLs in both knees. Penny is now looking forward to the next chapter in his life and is grateful for the opportunity to have played in the NFL.
