England's Euro 2016 dream ends in shock defeat to Iceland

Wayne Rooney gave Roy Hodgson's side a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot at the Allianz Riviera, but Iceland hit back through Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

England were streaky in the group but an injury-time Daniel Sturridge winner against Wales helped book the last-16 clash against Iceland, ranked 34th in the world, who had never reached a major tournament finals before.

Hodgson's men were overwhelming favourites but they were outplayed by a spirited Iceland side who defended resolutely and took their chances when they came. England's players were left in tears at the final whistle as their hopes of winning a first major trophy since 1966 were dashed in spectacular fashion.
